Summary

An extraordinary debut from a young Vietnamese American, Night Sky with Exit Wounds is a book of poetry unlike any other。 Steeped in war and cultural upheaval and wielding a fresh new language, Vuong writes about the most profound subjects – love and loss, conflict, grief, memory and desire – and attends to them all with lines that feel newly-minted, graceful in their cadences, passionate and hungry in their tender, close attention: ‘…the chief of police/facedown in a pool of Coca-Cola。/A palm-sized photo of his father soaking/beside his left ear。’ This is an unusual, important book: both gentle and visceral, vulnerable and assured, and its blend of humanity and power make it one of the best first collections of poetry to come out of America in years。

‘These are poems of exquisite beauty, unashamed of romance, and undaunted by looking directly into the horrors of war, the silences of history。 One of the most important debut collections for a generation。’ Andrew McMillan

Tell me it was for the hunger & nothing less。 For hunger is to give the body what it knows it cannot keep。Above all else, this collection felt deeply, deeply personal, almost to the point where I wasn't sure I should be reading it。 Tell me it was for the hunger & nothing less。 For hunger is to give the body what it knows it cannot keep。Above all else, this collection felt deeply, deeply personal, almost to the point where I wasn't sure I should be reading it。 。。。more

Lulling and emotionally dense, these lyrics open up depths, there's something oozing and soothing about these wounds, naturally evocative, full of trauma, questions of belonging, images of war, they pattern into rich layers of an intersecting immigrant and gay experience。 Familial themes and the tensions of different kinds of love pair with profound imaging。 Lulling and emotionally dense, these lyrics open up depths, there's something oozing and soothing about these wounds, naturally evocative, full of trauma, questions of belonging, images of war, they pattern into rich layers of an intersecting immigrant and gay experience。 Familial themes and the tensions of different kinds of love pair with profound imaging。 。。。more

I'll re-read the good ones in this collection till the music ends。 I absolutely love his mastery over words, it's magic when the stars align。 Some poems in this book sound a bit whimsical and steeped in vague ideas(or maybe I should read those ones again, you never know)。 But I really loved almost everything about this one。 Also I'm really inspired by his style and hope I can bring some of those techniques into my work。Favorites- Telemachus, Aubade with burning city, Anaphora as a coping mechani I'll re-read the good ones in this collection till the music ends。 I absolutely love his mastery over words, it's magic when the stars align。 Some poems in this book sound a bit whimsical and steeped in vague ideas(or maybe I should read those ones again, you never know)。 But I really loved almost everything about this one。 Also I'm really inspired by his style and hope I can bring some of those techniques into my work。Favorites- Telemachus, Aubade with burning city, Anaphora as a coping mechanism, Eurydice。 。。。more

I absolutely loved this poetry collection。 The collection being an exploration in itself, where he tried to build a character for his absent father was beautiful。 And the use of animals to depict different aspects and issues we face in this world furthermore increased my zest to continue reading the collection。

I should preface by saying that I don’t read much poetry。 I am just getting into it。 With that being said, I felt that most of these poems were just out of my reach。 The rhythm was palpable and the language beautiful - and although I caught some meanings here and there, I mostly felt like I was always missing something? Overall I didn’t find the poems to be easily digestible。 I hope to take another stab at this down the road someday!

Beautiful language and imagery, but most of the time too cryptic to even figure out a train of thought。 I enjoy symbolism and metaphor and the in between worlds they create。 These, however, flew from my grasp into a sky just out of my comprehension’s reach。 Definitely worthy of deeper, intense, academic analysis instead of just a weekend read。

Very moving poetry collection that touches on the themes of nationality, sexuality and violence。 Simple words but visually impactful nonetheless。
